Definition of diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar due to deficiency of insulin secretion and/or function. The typical symptoms of diabetes are "three more and one less" (excessive drinking, excessive eating, excessive urination, weight loss). People who show the typical symptoms of diabetes and meet any of the following conditions can be diagnosed with diabetes:

1. Blood glucose 11.1mmol/L (200mg/d1) at any time of day;

2. Fasting blood glucose level 7.0mmol/L (126mg/d1);

3. Blood glucose level 11.1mmol/L(200mg/d1) after 2 hours of oral glucose tolerance test.

Dangers of diabetes

Diabetes patients are often accompanied by abnormal metabolism of fat and protein. Long-term hyperglycemia can cause damage to a variety of organs, especially eyes, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and nerves, or organ dysfunction or failure, resulting in disability or premature death. Common complications of diabetes include stroke, myocardial infarction, retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic foot and so on.
