Currently, coffee has become an essential fuel for many office workers.

The benefits of drinking coffee include: refreshing the mind, relieving fatigue, preventing type 2 diabetes, and reducing the risk of certain cancers. However, coffee is not suitable for everyone. The following 8 types of people need to be especially cautious.

1. Those with Poor Sleep
Caffeine is the stimulating component in coffee. It is generally recommended to stop consuming coffee at least 5 hours before planned bedtime.

However, people's tolerance to caffeine varies. Those who already experience insomnia or sleep disorders should try to drink less or avoid coffee altogether.

2. People with Arrhythmia
It's common to experience a faster heartbeat after drinking coffee. However, those with pre-existing arrhythmias need to be cautious. Arrhythmia refers to an irregular heartbeat caused by abnormal electrical conduction in the heart, including beating too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Doctors often advise patients with palpitations or arrhythmias to limit or reduce their caffeine intake.

3. People with Stomach Conditions
Coffee can stimulate the stomach to produce more gastric acid. For individuals suffering from gastric ulcers, excessive stomach acid, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), frequent or excessive coffee consumption may lead to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, and heartburn.

4. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common functional bowel disorder. Patients may experience frequent diarrhea or constipation. These individuals are often more sensitive to caffeine, which can exacerbate gastrointestinal discomfort and diarrhea.

5. People with Osteoporosis
Healthy individuals need not worry about coffee causing osteoporosis. However, for those already diagnosed with osteoporosis, the Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Management of Pain in Elderly Osteoporosis (2024 Edition) recommends avoiding excessive coffee consumption.

6. People with Glaucoma
Individuals with glaucoma should avoid high-caffeine beverages like coffee in their daily lives to prevent increased intraocular pressure and fluctuations that could cause further damage to the eyes.

7. Children and Adolescents
The Chinese Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents (2018) mention that foods containing caffeine can negatively affect children's brain development and function. Therefore, children aged 12 and under should not consume strong tea, coffee, or other caffeinated beverages.

8. Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women
For women who are not habitual coffee drinkers, it is advised to avoid coffee during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For those who regularly drink coffee, it is best to consume it in limited amounts.
